Over the years of working with the public, I have assisted many transgender people seeking community services. What I learned is that even in a community that espoused tolerance, it was difficult to find them the information and support they needed. But that was years ago. With the very public transformation of Caitlyn Jenner, and the Supreme Court gay marriage ruling, public opinion is slowly changing.
I’m not here to make a case for or against LGBT issues. I’m here to talk about George by Alex Gino, a recently released children’s chapter book about George, a biological boy who believes she’s a girl. The novel touches on bullying, fears, courage, and ultimately about acceptance.
A few things to point out — the main character in the book is in elementary/middle school. Therefore, the story is relatively gentle for such a hot topic. It presents a difficult issue in the most noncontroversial way, impressing upon young readers that no matter how difficult it may be, they should find someone they trust and confide in them.
My guess–a probable Newbery Award nominee.
